Why do Muslims fast in Ramadan?
In Islam, fasting is not simply abstaining from food and drink. It is an act of worship through which a Muslim seeks closeness to God, achieves taqwa (God-consciousness), and grows spiritually.
By giving up worldly pleasures during the daytime, Muslims learn patience and discipline, and strengthen their ability to control desires.
Muslims see fasting as a practical training in taqwa: a person chooses to obey God even in things that are normally allowed. This builds strong willpower and helps in leaving negative habits behind.
That is why the impact of fasting often continues beyond Ramadan, reflecting on one’s behavior and character throughout the year.
